Bedwell River Road to Della Falls Trailhead (British Columbia)

Canada's tallest waterfall, earned on mud.

Difficult

Della Falls drops 440 metres off the Della Lake plateau in Strathcona Provincial Park — Canada’s tallest waterfall — and most people who see it earn it the hard way. The Bedwell River FSR leaves Gold River heading south along Muchalat Inlet before cutting east through Cathedral Grove-style timber toward the trailhead at Great Central Lake’s far end. The road itself is active logging territory, meaning loaded trucks own the right of way and sections wash out every spring. The crossing at Bedwell Creek after heavy rain has turned rigs around more than once. This is not a day-trip road — it’s a commitment road.

High-clearance 4WD is the minimum, and aired-down all-terrains handle the muddy clay sections significantly better than street rubber. No permit is needed for the FSR, but Strathcona Park wilderness camping beyond the trailhead requires self-registration. Best window is July through September when the creek crossings drop to manageable levels. Gold River is your last fuel and food stop — treat it that way. Cell service dies past the first 10 kilometres and doesn’t come back. What you get at the end is one of the most dramatic backcountry payoffs on Vancouver Island.
