Maricao Coffee Plantation Ridge Road

Coffee country climbs where hurricanes left their mark

Difficult

This isn’t your tourist-friendly coffee tour route. The road climbs through abandoned coffee fincas above Maricao where Hurricane Maria’s debris still blocks side trails and the main track stays rutted enough to test your suspension. You’ll navigate steep grades past rusted processing equipment and overgrown terraces, with the technical challenge ramping up after the Monte del Estado junction where washouts force creative line choices through coffee grove remnants.

High clearance 4WD mandatory—these plantation roads weren’t built for comfort. Wet season turns clay sections into slip-and-slide nightmares, but dry months (December-April) offer the best traction for tackling 20-percent grades. Pack recovery gear, extra water, and expect to spend half your time in low range. The payoff hits when you break treeline above 2,800 feet with views stretching to both coasts, plus you’re running routes most Puerto Ricans have never seen.
