Mosquito Bay to Esperanza Sugar Mill Ruins Road

Glowing bay to ghost mill adventure

Easy

This remote track on Vieques island connects the world-famous bioluminescent Mosquito Bay with the haunting sugar mill ruins near Esperanza, crossing through sections of the former Navy bombing range. The route starts at the Mosquito Bay observation deck and follows old military roads past unexploded ordnance warning signs and concrete bunkers, eventually reaching the 19th-century Central Playa Grande sugar mill ruins. Wild horses roam freely through this landscape, and you’ll likely encounter them grazing near the crumbling stone walls and rusted machinery.

Easy to moderate difficulty with some sandy sections and water crossings that can challenge 2WD vehicles after heavy rain. The biggest hazard is getting stuck in soft sand near the coast, not the clearly marked UXO areas which are off-limits. Best visited during the dry season (December-April) when sand is more compact. No camping allowed, but the combination of bioluminescence, military history, and colonial ruins makes this a unique Caribbean experience. Start early to allow time for both the ruins exploration and returning for the evening bio bay tour.
