Cerro Punta to Hacienda Nueva Coastal Access Road
Abandoned plantation road to secluded Caribbean beaches.
This forgotten plantation access road descends from the cloud forests of Cerro Punta through abandoned sugar hacienda ruins to reach some of Puerto Rico’s most isolated Caribbean coastline. The route follows the original 1920s plantation service road past Hacienda Nueva’s crumbling mill structures and worker quarters, now reclaimed by jungle growth. At the Río Loco ford crossing, massive cecropia trees arch over the weathered concrete remains of the plantation’s narrow-gauge railway bridge, creating a natural tunnel through the tropical canopy.
Moderate difficulty with a few technical sections around the old railway cuts and stream crossings. Any high-clearance 4WD can handle the route, though the final descent to the coast gets steep and loose during rainy season. Stock vehicles should avoid May through November when flash flooding makes the Río Loco crossing dangerous. No facilities or services — pack everything including recovery gear. The reward is pristine beaches accessible only by foot or 4×4, plus the haunting remains of Puerto Rico’s sugar empire scattered throughout the forest. Perfect for multi-day camping away from resort crowds.
