Scattered camping opportunities across the windswept plateau between 10,000-11,000 feet elevation, accessed via rough spur roads off the main highway. Popular spots include areas near Island Lake, Beartooth Lake, and Long Lake. Expect granite slabs, alpine grass, and zero wind protection — this is true mountain camping at its most exposed.
Season runs July through early September only due to snow. Weather changes without warning above treeline. No facilities, no water sources (despite all the lakes — treat everything). Access roads are rough dirt requiring high clearance. Popular with climbers heading to the Beartooths’ technical peaks.
