Custer National Forest Crazy Peak Dispersed Sites
Scattered sites along the upper reaches of Crazy Peak Road offer spectacular mountain camping at 7,800 feet elevation. Half a dozen pull-offs provide room for medium rigs, with established fire rings and million-dollar views across the Shields Valley. Alpine meadows filled with wildflowers in July and August. Nights get cold even in summer, and weather can change fast.
Access via Crazy Peak Road from Big Timber, 14 miles of progressively rougher mountain road. Final 3 miles require 4WD and experience with steep, rocky terrain. Road typically snow-free June through September. No water sources up high, pack what you need. Popular with serious backcountry hunters in fall.
