Custer National Forest Crazy Mountains West Slope Dispersed Area
Scattered camping spots along Forest Service roads on the western slope of the Crazy Mountains, offering spectacular views of the jagged limestone peaks that give this range its name. Sites range from meadow clearings at 6,000 feet to sheltered spots in mixed conifer forest. Most accommodate 2-3 vehicles with natural windbreaks and seasonal creek access for water. Fire restrictions typically apply July through September.
Access via several forest roads branching off US Highway 89 north of Big Timber. Roads are rough dirt requiring high-clearance vehicles, especially after spring snowmelt. Snow closes upper elevations October through May. Popular with hunters in fall, otherwise sees light use.
