Sheyenne National Grassland Valley City Dispersed Area
This dispersed area sits within the Sheyenne National Grassland, one of the last remnants of tallgrass prairie in North Dakota. Camping is scattered across gently rolling hills covered in big bluestem and Indian grass, with seasonal wildflower displays that peak in July-August. Sites are primitive with no facilities, just wide open prairie where you can pitch anywhere suitable. Vehicle traffic is minimal except during hunting season.
Access from various township roads off Highway 1 near Valley City. Most routes are maintained gravel suitable for any vehicle, though some two-tracks require high-clearance during wet periods. The grassland transforms dramatically with seasons – lush green in spring, golden in fall, and harsh in winter when camping becomes challenging.
