Chippewa National Forest Bear Head Lake Dispersed Sites
A handful of unmarked pull-offs along Forest Road 2240 offer primitive camping on the shores of Bear Head Lake, deep in the Chippewa National Forest. Sites are nothing fancy — just level spots in the pines with fire rings left by previous campers and direct lake access for fishing northern pike and walleye. Capacity runs maybe 8-10 rigs total across all the spots, and you’ll often have the entire lake to yourself outside of peak summer weekends.
Access via FR 2240 is straightforward gravel but can get soft after heavy rains. No services, no toilets, no trash pickup — pack it all out. The road stays open year-round but snow makes it impassable without tracks from late November through March. Perfect base camp for exploring the extensive forest road network that connects to dozens of other remote lakes.
