Ingraham Trail to Tibbitt Lake

Canadian Shield wilderness beyond the pavement

Easy

The Ingraham Trail doesn’t end at Tibbitt Lake—it just gets interesting. Past the pavement’s end 70 kilometers from Yellowknife, a network of mining exploration roads penetrates deep into the Canadian Shield where ancient granite meets endless muskeg and pristine lakes that haven’t seen a fishing line in years. The main track continues northeast toward old exploration camps, crossing countless beaver dams and threading between house-sized boulders left by retreating glaciers.

This is easy to moderate difficulty depending how far you push, suitable for any high-clearance vehicle in summer. The real challenge is navigation through the web of unmarked mining roads—GPS and paper maps are essential. Prime season runs July through September before freeze-up. No services beyond Tibbitt Lake, so fuel up in Yellowknife. What you’re buying is access to some of the most pristine wilderness camping in the territories, with granite shores, northern lights, and the kind of silence city folks forgot existed.
