Apalachicola National Forest Camel Lake Road Dispersed Sites
Forest Road 105 (Camel Lake Road) provides access to numerous primitive camping areas tucked among longleaf pines and wiregrass prairies typical of Florida’s panhandle. Sites range from small clearings suitable for single vehicles to larger openings that can handle groups, most with existing fire rings and easy access to Camel Lake for fishing and paddling. The sandy soil drains well even after heavy rains, and towering pines provide excellent shade during Florida’s intense summer heat.
Roads are generally suitable for any vehicle when dry, but heavy rains can make the sandy tracks soft and challenging for low-clearance vehicles. Hunting seasons bring increased activity from October through February. No facilities, potable water, or trash service — pack it all out. Red-cockaded woodpeckers and other rare species inhabit the area, so observe wildlife viewing guidelines posted at forest entrances.
