BLM Piute Mountains Dispersed Area
This BLM area sits at 4,000+ feet elevation in the Piute Mountains east of Lake Isabella, offering cooler temperatures than the surrounding desert floor. Scattered pullouts and flat areas accommodate everything from tents to large RVs, with panoramic views stretching from the Kern River Valley to the High Sierra peaks. Sites vary from open desert flats to spots tucked between granite boulders and Joshua trees. Most offer natural windbreaks and privacy between camps.
Access via Kelso Valley Road and various unnamed spurs — high-clearance helpful for the better sites though 2WD can access several spots. Popular with astronomers for dark skies and hunters in season. Winter camping possible but expect cold nights above 4,000 feet.
