BLM Surprise Canyon Dispersed Area
This rugged canyon cuts deep into the Panamint Mountains, offering dispersed camping among Joshua trees and desert scrub. Multiple pull-off sites exist along the lower canyon, with the real prize being access to historic Panamint City ghost town ruins higher up. Fire restrictions year-round due to desert environment and limited water availability.
Access via Surprise Canyon Road from Trona-Wildrose Road – extremely rough 4WD track with rock gardens and steep grades. Popular with ghost town enthusiasts and serious 4-wheelers. Completely dry camping, bring all water. Winter and spring offer the best weather conditions.
