Los Padres National Forest Big Sur Backcountry Dispersed Sites

Dispersed Camping

Remote sites tucked into redwood groves and oak woodlands high above the Big Sur coast, reached via narrow fire roads that climb steeply from Highway 1. Most sites are small clearings that fit 1-2 vehicles max — this isn’t a place for big rigs. Spectacular ocean views from some spots, complete solitude guaranteed. Fire restrictions common during dry season, and coastal fog can roll in without warning.

Access via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road or other fire roads — steep grades, narrow passages, and potential for locked gates during fire season. Road conditions change frequently due to slides and washouts. Best visited April through October, but always check current road status. No facilities whatsoever — pack everything in, pack everything out.
