Alabama Hills BLM Dispersed Camping

Scattered dispersed sites across the Alabama Hills offer some of the best free camping in California, with dramatic granite formations and unobstructed views of Mount Whitney and the Sierra Nevada. The area gets busy with photographers chasing sunrise and sunset, especially during wildflower season, but there’s enough room to spread out. Fire restrictions typically apply year-round due to the desert environment.

Access is straightforward via Whitney Portal Road and Movie Flat Road, suitable for any vehicle. Sites range from pull-offs along the main roads to more secluded spots deeper in the hills requiring short walks. No amenities whatsoever — pack everything in and out. Cell service is spotty to none.
