Bear Creek Road to Beartooth Plateau
Mining road to Montana's roof
Bear Creek Road launches straight up the Beartooth Mountains from Red Lodge, following an old mining track that dead-ends at scattered mining claims near treeline. This brutal 18-mile climb gains over 4,000 feet through switchbacks carved into granite walls, passing abandoned mines and crossing exposed ridges where weather changes in minutes. The final 6 miles above Rock Creek demand respect — loose talus, narrow shelves, and no room for error.
Expert-level route requiring experienced drivers and capable rigs with low-range transfer cases and good tires. Weather window is short — July and August only, with afternoon thunderstorms a constant threat. Carry extra fuel, water, and emergency gear; recovery is measured in days, not hours. Cell service disappears after mile 5. The reward is standing on some of Montana’s highest driveable terrain, surrounded by peaks that scrape 12,000 feet and alpine lakes that reflect endless sky.
