Boulder Mountains Loop
Technical mining circuit through Idaho ghost country
This challenging 75-mile loop climbs through the Boulder Mountains’ mining district, connecting the ghost towns of Vienna, Atlanta, and Rocky Bar via narrow mountain roads that miners carved in the 1860s. The route includes the infamous Rocky Bar Road — a shelf road cut into cliffsides with no guardrails and thousand-foot drops. At 9,200 feet, Dollarhide Summit offers panoramic views of the Sawtooth Range before the descent to Atlanta, where a few hardy residents still call the ghost town home.
Expert 4WD skills required for narrow shelf roads, loose rock, and steep grades up to 18%. Lockers and low gearing essential. Summer-only access due to snow at elevation. Pack emergency gear — this is serious backcountry with no cell service and limited bailout options once committed. Multiple creek crossings and technical rock sections demand attention. The reward is accessing some of Idaho’s most authentic ghost town country and camping under stars at 8,000+ feet.
