Sun Valley to Stanley Backcountry Route

Expert mining roads through Idaho's high country spine

Expert

The boulder-strewn mining roads between Sun Valley and Stanley cut through some of Idaho’s most unforgiving high country, where molybdenum mines left a maze of rocky shelf roads clinging to 10,000-foot ridgelines. This 47-mile route climbs through Galena Summit’s avalanche zones before dropping into the Sawtooth Valley via Washington Basin, passing the remnants of Galena and Vienna mining camps that once hauled ore down these same treacherous grades.

This is expert-level terrain demanding full skid plates, recovery gear, and a spotter for the rockfall-prone sections above treeline. Best tackled July through September when snow clears the passes, though afternoon thunderstorms can turn exposed ridges deadly. No permits needed, but fuel up in Ketchum—there’s nothing until Stanley except alpine silence and mining ghosts. The payoff is unfiltered Sawtooth wilderness and bragging rights on one of Idaho’s most technical high-country crossings.
