This enormous saltwater lagoon southwest of Guerrero Negro is one of Baja’s premier wildlife viewing destinations. From January to March, Pacific gray whales come here to breed and birth their calves — you’ll see spouts and breaches from the shoreline viewpoints. The lagoon also hosts massive flocks of migratory birds, sea lions, and harbor seals year-round.
Access is via a 15-mile paved road from Highway 1, well-marked with brown tourist signs. There’s a small visitor center, interpretive trail, and basic camping allowed along the eastern shore. Bring binoculars and layers — it gets windy and cool near the water even on warm days.
