Matobo Hills Granite Maze

Sacred granite giants and ancient art

Moderate

The granite balancing rocks of the Matobo Hills have been defying gravity for 2 billion years, creating a natural obstacle course that’ll test your approach angles and spotting skills like nowhere else in southern Africa. This technical route weaves through massive granite whale-backs and between car-sized boulders where San hunters left 3,000 rock paintings documenting their hunts. The infamous Elephant’s Back section requires precise wheel placement to navigate around sacred sites while the Devils Backbone ridge demands low-range crawling over polished granite slabs that become lethal when wet.

Moderate to difficult depending on route choice — the granite can be deceptively slippery and unforgiving to undercarriages, so skid plates and careful spotting are essential. Respect for cultural sites is mandatory; some areas are completely off-limits to vehicles. Dry season from April to October offers the best grip on rock surfaces and clearest access to remote art galleries. The route rewards technical driving skills with some of the continent’s most significant cultural heritage and geological formations that inspired the Zimbabwean flag itself.
