Manastash Ridge Road (Washington)
Extreme ridge climb through Cascade foothills
This challenging ridge road climbs 3,000 feet up Manastash Ridge in the Wenatchee National Forest, connecting Ellensburg to Cle Elum through some of central Washington’s most rugged terrain. The route follows old logging roads and mining tracks, with the steepest sections requiring 4WD low range to navigate loose rock, deep ruts, and grades exceeding 20%. From the 5,600-foot high point, you get commanding views of Mount Rainier, the Stuart Range, and the Yakima Valley spread out below like a patchwork quilt.
Extreme difficulty due to steep, rocky climbs that will test your vehicle’s traction and cooling system – this isn’t a trail for stock vehicles or beginners. Essential gear includes recovery equipment, extra coolant, and tire repair kit. Best tackled June through September when snow clears, but avoid during hunting season. No services along the route and cell coverage is nonexistent. Dispersed camping available in national forest areas. The reward is some of Washington’s best high-country views and the satisfaction of conquering one of the state’s most technically demanding ridge runs.
