This massive wilderness protects some of the most stunning red rock country in the Southwest, stretching across the Arizona-Utah border. The monument encompasses towering vermilion-colored cliffs, slot canyons, and the famous Wave formation that requires advance permits and a grueling hike to reach. The landscape feels like Mars – endless expanses of sculpted sandstone under big desert sky.
Access requires high-clearance vehicles on most routes, with House Rock Valley Road being the main artery through the area. No developed facilities exist within the monument, so come prepared with water and supplies. The Wave permits are notoriously difficult to secure, but the monument offers plenty of spectacular scenery without the lottery system.
