Limestone Canyon Road

Remote slot canyon adventure near Mexican border

Difficult

Limestone Canyon Road penetrates deep into the remote Baboquivari Mountains southwest of Tucson, following a rough two-track through classic Sonoran Desert terrain to one of Arizona’s most spectacular slot canyons. The route starts mundane enough through typical desert scrub, but mile seven drops into the canyon proper where towering limestone walls close in overhead and ancient Tohono O’odham petroglyphs mark sacred water sources. The final push to the canyon’s heart requires precise navigation through house-sized boulders and flash flood debris.

This is serious backcountry — high-clearance 4WD absolutely mandatory, and recovery gear isn’t optional given the isolation. Summer is brutal and dangerous due to flash flood potential; stick to cooler months between October and April. No permits required but you’re crossing into traditional Tohono O’odham territory, so respect the cultural sites. Pack plenty of water and extra fuel as the nearest services are 40+ miles away in Three Points. Dispersed camping is available but check weather conditions religiously — this canyon has claimed vehicles during sudden storms.
