Wharton State Forest Atsion Recreation Area
Atsion sits on the shores of Atsion Lake with 50 campsites split between tent and RV areas, most with fire rings and picnic tables. The lake offers swimming, fishing, and canoeing, while the campground serves as a basecamp for exploring the 122,880-acre Wharton State Forest. The Batona Trail passes nearby, connecting to the Mullica River and deeper Pine Barrens wilderness.
Reservations required April through October, when sites fill quickly on weekends. The sandy soil drains well but can get soft after heavy rain. No hookups, but there’s a dump station and bathhouses with hot showers. Gates close at sunset, so plan your comings and goings accordingly.
