Wharton State Forest Batsto Village Campground
Fifty sites scattered through pitch pine and oak scrub near the restored 18th-century Batsto Village. The campground feels like stepping back in time — no hookups, just fire rings and picnic tables among the scrub. Sites are spacious enough for larger rigs, though the sandy soil means you’ll want leveling blocks. Bathhouse with cold showers and pit toilets. Gets busy on weekends during cranberry harvest season in October.
Access is via paved Route 542, but once you’re here, you’re at the gateway to hundreds of miles of sand roads through the Pine Barrens. The village itself is worth exploring — working gristmill, mansion tours, and blacksmith demonstrations. Water from hand pumps scattered around the campground.
