Rollins Pass East Portal Trailhead
This well-marked trailhead at 11,500 feet serves as the eastern starting point for the Rollins Pass road — a historic railroad grade that crosses the Continental Divide. The route follows the old Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railway bed, offering relatively moderate grades despite the extreme elevation. Multiple spur roads branch off toward alpine lakes and 13,000-foot peaks.
The road to the trailhead itself requires high-clearance and gets rough in the final mile. Snow typically blocks access from October through June. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer — start early. No services or water at the trailhead, just a small parking area and trail register.
