East Portal Trailhead Moffat Tunnel
The concrete portal of the famous Moffat Tunnel marks the start of several wilderness trails heading into the James Peak and Indian Peaks areas. Small parking area with space for maybe 8-10 vehicles, pit toilet, and an informational kiosk about the tunnel’s construction history. The portal itself is an impressive piece of 1920s engineering — trains still rumble through daily. Trails lead to Heart Lake, Crater Lake, and eventually connect to the Continental Divide Trail system.
Access via Rollins Pass Road (County Road 149) from Rollinsville — starts paved but becomes rough gravel. The road is usually open May through October but can be muddy and rutted in early season. Limited turnaround space, so keep rigs compact. Popular with Front Range day hikers on weekends, so arrive early or plan for midweek visits.
