Serra da Bodoquena Crystal Cave Mining Circuit
Underground Brazil through crystal mining country
Deep in Mato Grosso do Sul’s forgotten backcountry, this route follows crystal miners’ tracks through the Serra da Bodoquena’s limestone maze. The trail begins at abandoned fluorspar workings near Jardim, winding through cattle country toward the Gruta do Lago Azul region where underground rivers carved cathedral chambers from bedrock. You’ll ford the Rio Formoso multiple times and navigate around massive sinkholes where the earth simply opened up and swallowed the forest.
Challenging sections demand experienced drivers and recovery gear, especially during wet season (December-March) when creek crossings become serious commitments. High-clearance 4WD with low-range is mandatory for the technical limestone ledges and muddy ranch roads. The reward is access to crystal-clear cenotes and caves that most tourists never see, plus camping spots beside underground rivers where you can hear water flowing through rock chambers beneath your tent.
