Wissahickon Creek Upper Trail

The upper Wissahickon follows an old carriage road from Mount Airy Avenue to Northwestern Avenue, threading between towering tulip trees and the creek’s constant murmur. You’ll navigate around the historic Livezey House ruins and cross several technical stone ford points where 19th-century mill races once diverted water. The route passes multiple stone bridge foundations from Philadelphia’s industrial past, with the most challenging section at Devil’s Pool where granite boulders create a natural obstacle course.

This is moderate territory requiring high-clearance vehicles and experience reading water crossings. Spring runoff can make fords impassable, while summer and fall offer the best conditions. No permits needed, but parking fills fast on weekends. Philadelphia Parks manages the area with strict no-camping rules. What you get is legitimate technical driving minutes from Center City, plus some of the region’s best preserved colonial-era stonework and the cleanest creek water in Philadelphia.
