Pennypack Park Creek Trail Access Road
Hidden service roads through Northeast Philly wilderness
The maintenance roads threading through Pennypack Park’s 1,600 acres provide back-door access to sections most visitors never see. Starting from Pine Road, the network branches north toward Rhawn Street and east toward the Delaware County line, crossing Pennypack Creek multiple times via concrete fords built for park service vehicles. The eastern section passes the ruins of Frankford Arsenal’s TNT manufacturing facilities, abandoned since World War II.
Moderate difficulty due to creek crossings and occasional muddy sections after rain. Stock 4WD recommended for wet conditions, though dry-weather access possible with high-clearance 2WD. Gates restrict access during certain seasons – call ahead. Spring and fall offer best conditions with manageable water levels. Limited cell service in the deeper valleys. Popular with local 4×4 clubs for driver training on technical water crossings.
