Quebrada de Palala Mining Circuit

Sandstone gorge through abandoned copper mines

Difficult

Hidden in the pre-Andean foothills east of San Juan, Quebrada de Palala cuts through red sandstone formations honeycombed with abandoned copper mine shafts from the early 1900s. The track follows the old mining road up the quebrada, threading between towering canyon walls where rusted machinery and collapsed adits mark Argentina’s copper boom days. Technical sections include loose scree climbs, narrow ledges above drop-offs, and water crossings where seasonal floods have carved new channels through mine tailings.

Difficult rating demands experienced drivers and modified 4WD with skid plates, recovery gear, and low-range gearing. Rock sliders recommended for canyon pinch points. Access from Villa San Agustín requires local knowledge; no marked route. April through October avoids flash flood season, but check weather upstream. The payoff is complete solitude in geological wonderland: petroglyphs on canyon walls, intact mining structures, and views across San Juan’s wine valleys from the 8,500-foot rim.
