This trailhead sits at 11,000 feet along the American Basin road, accessible via the Alpine Loop from either Silverton or Lake City. There’s parking for about 20 vehicles in a rough gravel lot, with vault toilets but no water. The peak itself is a relatively easy 14er hike, but the real draw for overlanders is the stunning alpine scenery and wildflower displays in July and August.
The access road requires 4WD and high clearance — it’s part of the Alpine Loop network with loose rock and steep grades. Weather can change fast at this elevation, and snow lingers well into June. Popular spot, so expect company on summer weekends. The basin above the trailhead offers some of the best high-alpine camping in Colorado if you can find a flat spot.
