Géiseres del Tatio Dawn Viewpoint
The Tatio Geysers sit at 4,320 meters elevation in the high Andes, making this the world’s third-largest and highest geyser field. The best display happens at dawn when the temperature differential creates towering steam columns — some reaching 6 meters high. The main viewing area has wooden walkways and interpretive signs, but the real spectacle happens across the broader field where dozens of smaller vents steam and bubble. Bring warm layers — temperatures can drop to -15°C before sunrise.
Access is via a rough gravel road from San Pedro de Atacama, about 90 kilometers and 2.5 hours each way. High-clearance 4WD recommended due to washouts and altitude. Most visitors arrive on tours, but independent travelers can camp nearby at the CONAF refuge. The geysers are most active from 6-8 AM, then activity decreases as temperatures rise.
