Sierras de Famatina La Mejicana Gold Rush Circuit
Historic gold mining circuit through Argentina's highest peaks.
La Mejicana was Argentina’s richest gold mine, and this circuit follows the original supply road to 4,200 meters through the Sierras de Famatina. The route starts at Chilecito and climbs past the abandoned Estación 8 cable car terminal, where rusted machinery still clings to the mountainside. Technical switchbacks on loose shale lead to the mine ruins at La Mejicana, with stunning views across the Salinas Grandes and distant Aconcagua on clear days.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions—stock high-clearance handles most sections, but loose rock and steep grades favor 4WD low range. The final push to the mine requires careful tire placement on deteriorated road surface. Best from April to October when snow doesn’t block the upper reaches. Carry extra water and warm clothing—afternoon storms roll in fast. This route delivers legitimate mining history in Argentina’s most overlooked mountain range, plus some of the country’s best high-altitude scenery.
