Portezuelo del Viento Pass
This windswept pass at 4,748 meters sits on the Chilean-Argentine border, providing spectacular views of Ojos del Salado and surrounding volcanic peaks. The area serves as a launching point for expeditions to the world’s highest active volcano and offers dispersed camping opportunities for properly equipped rigs. Temperatures can drop well below freezing even in summer, and weather changes rapidly.
Access requires high-clearance 4WD and proper preparation for extreme altitude. The road from Copiapó is rough volcanic rock and sand for the final 50 kilometers. No facilities exist here—bring everything including extra fuel, water, and cold-weather gear. Best attempted April through November when storms are less frequent.
