One of Colorado’s best-preserved ghost towns, sitting in a stark alpine basin surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks. Several original structures still stand including the famous two-story false-front building that’s become an icon of the San Juans. Interpretive signs tell the story of this boom-and-bust silver camp that peaked around 1880. Gets busy with tourists but worth the stop for the history and dramatic setting.
Access via rough 4WD road from Silverton, about 12 miles of washboard and rock gardens. Weather can change fast at this elevation — afternoon thunderstorms are common. No facilities, just the ruins and mountain views. Park respectfully and don’t climb on the fragile structures.
