Puna de Atacama Salt Flat Explorer

Flamingo paradise at 12,000 feet

Difficult

The Puna de Atacama feels like driving on another planet – endless white salt crusts broken by volcanic cones that pierce a sky so blue it hurts. This remote circuit from San Antonio de los Cobres threads between Salar de Pocitos, Salar de Pastos Grandes, and smaller salt pans where Andean flamingos gather in improbable pink clouds. The track crosses the Salar de Antofalla, Argentina’s largest salt flat, where your vehicle becomes a tiny speck crawling across a blindingly white expanse that extends beyond the curve of the earth.

Difficult route demanding high-clearance 4WD with GPS navigation – tracks disappear in salt maze sections and landmarks shift with perspective. May through September avoids summer storms that can strand vehicles in caustic mud. No permits but notify authorities in Salta – this is serious backcountry where rescue means days, not hours. Stock up completely in San Antonio de los Cobres. The reward: solitude on a scale that redefines the word, wildlife adapted to extreme altitude, and salt flat sunrises that’ll ruin every other sunrise you’ll ever see.
