Observatorio Mamalluca Vicuña

Point of Interest

Perched in the hills above Vicuña, this public observatory takes advantage of the Elqui Valley’s exceptional atmospheric conditions and minimal light pollution. The facility offers guided night tours with powerful telescopes, revealing southern hemisphere constellations invisible from North America. Reserve ahead—tours fill up quickly, especially during new moon phases.

Access via a winding 9km gravel road from Vicuña that’s fine for most vehicles. Tours run year-round but winter months offer the longest nights. The facility has a small visitor center but no camping—stay in Vicuña or at nearby campgrounds and drive up for your scheduled tour.

Southern hemisphere stargazing in pristine skies.
