Valle de la Luna Mars Landscape Overlook

Point of Interest

This viewpoint atop the salt-encrusted ridgeline offers panoramic views across Valle de la Luna’s alien terrain — twisted salt spires, wind-sculpted canyons, and mineral deposits that shift from white to rust-red depending on the light. The overlook sits at the end of a short walking trail from the parking area, with interpretive signs explaining the geological processes that created this Mars-like landscape.

Best visited in late afternoon when the setting sun ignites the formations in brilliant oranges and purples. The trail is wheelchair accessible but bring sun protection — there’s zero shade and the high-altitude UV is intense. Part of the larger Los Flamencos National Reserve system with a modest entrance fee collected at the gate.

NASA-certified Mars training landscape.
