This unmarked pullout along County Road 2 marks the start of the legendary Engineer Pass trail — a brutal 4WD route that climbs to 12,800 feet through some of Colorado’s gnarliest alpine terrain. The first few miles are deceptive, rolling through meadows before the real punishment begins with loose rock, steep grades, and exposure that’ll test your rig and your nerves.
Park along the shoulder where CR-2 starts getting rough, about 2 miles northeast of Silverton. No facilities, just a dirt pullout and the beginning of an adventure. Summer only — snow blocks the pass well into July most years. Modified 4WD minimum, and even then, plenty turn back.
