Mineral Wells State Park Penitentiary Hollow

Penitentiary Hollow earned its name from the limestone quarry where Texas convicts cut building stone for the state capitol in the 1880s. This 8-mile loop threads through the quarry cuts and natural limestone canyons where massive Cross Timbers oaks create a canopy over technical rock gardens. The route drops 200 feet into the hollow via a series of limestone shelves that require careful tire placement — one wrong move sends you sliding into the century-old quarry pits below.

Difficult rating due to the technical limestone surfaces and tight canyon sections; modified vehicles with rock sliders recommended, though skillful drivers can manage it in stock rigs. Spring offers wildflowers and flowing creek, but wet limestone becomes treacherous. Summer heat makes the protected canyon bearable when the plains above bake. The trail connects to dispersed camping areas with fire rings built from the same limestone blocks the convicts quarried 150 years ago.
