Devils River State Natural Area Lost Mine Trail

This backcountry trail winds through rugged limestone canyon country to the remains of a 1920s mercury mine and several crystal-clear spring pools. The path is rocky and requires scrambling over boulders in places, but rewards hikers with solitude and some of the clearest water in Texas. Trail markers are sparse — download a GPS track before heading out.
Access requires a high-clearance vehicle for the final 13 miles of ranch road to the trailhead. No services or water at the trailhead itself. Spring flow varies seasonally, but the pools typically hold water year-round. Avoid during flash flood season (May-October).
