Rolling Plains Windmill Heritage Trail
Century-old windmills across Texas grasslands
The Rolling Plains Windmill Heritage Trail follows 42 miles of ranch roads and section line tracks across the mesquite-dotted grasslands of Knox County, connecting 23 historic windmills that still pump water for cattle operations dating to the 1890s. This scenic drive crosses five different ranches via handshake agreements with local landowners, passing through country where Comanche war parties once watered their horses and buffalo hunters made their last stands. The route’s highlight is the restored Aermotor windmill at Dead Horse Creek, a 30-foot steel giant that’s been turning in Texas wind for over a century.
Easy to Moderate depending on recent rains—the caliche and clay roads get slick but rarely impassable. Any high-clearance vehicle works fine in dry conditions. Spring offers the best experience with wildflowers and mild weather, but summer heat can be brutal with no shade for 40 miles. No permits needed, but respect private property and close all gates. Limited camping opportunities, but the windmills provide epic sunset photography. This is pure Texas ranch country—wide open spaces and cowboy history at every turn.
