Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall
This stunning 20-meter waterfall plunges over perfectly formed hexagonal basalt columns, creating one of Iceland’s most photogenic natural sculptures. The dark volcanic rock contrasts sharply with the white water, especially during the glacial melt season. A short walk from the parking area leads to multiple viewpoints, with the best shots from the river level platform below the falls.
Accessed via F26 (Sprengisandur route) approximately 40km from Route 1. The approach road is rough but manageable for most 4WD vehicles in summer. Can be combined with visits to Goðafoss or as part of highland crossing routes. Gets busy with tour buses midday in summer – early morning or evening visits offer better photography and solitude.
