Hveravellir Highland Hut and Hot Springs
Remote mountain hut complex sitting at 650 meters elevation in the central highlands, featuring a natural geothermal pool perfect for soaking after rough highland driving. The main hut sleeps about 60 people in dormitory-style bunks, with basic cooking facilities and composting toilets. The hot spring pool maintains 38-40°C year-round and offers stunning views across the highland plateau.
Access via F35 Kjölur route requires high-clearance 4WD, especially through river crossings. Open roughly June through September depending on snow conditions. No camping allowed on the immediate grounds, but dispersed camping is possible several hundred meters away from the buildings. Book hut space ahead during peak season — this is a popular stop for highland hikers and overlanders.
