BLM Steens Mountain Kiger Gorge Rim Dispersed Area
This dispersed area sits on the eastern rim of Kiger Gorge at over 8,000 feet elevation, offering spectacular views into the U-shaped glacier-carved canyon below. Sites are scattered along the rim road with natural windbreaks from scattered junipers. The elevation means cool nights even in summer, and the area can see snow into May. Fire rings exist but fires may be restricted during dry periods.
Access requires driving the Steens Mountain Loop Road, which closes seasonally above the gorge viewpoint due to snow. The road is rough gravel requiring high-clearance vehicles, and weather can change rapidly at this elevation. No water sources available — pack everything including extra warm gear.
