Estrada da Borborema Agreste Circuit
Sertão cattle trails through highland stone country
The Estrada da Borborema follows centuries-old cattle droving routes through Paraíba’s agreste highland plateau, connecting forgotten stone towns built during the cotton boom with remote fazendas where vaqueiros still work cattle on horseback. The route climbs through the Serra da Borborema on tracks carved by ox carts hauling cotton to coastal ports, passing massive granite inselbergs and crossing seasonal streams that rage during rare winter rains but vanish completely in the brutal summer drought.
This moderate route requires high-clearance 4WD for rocky creek beds and erosion gullies but stays mostly on established dirt roads passable year-round. Navigation can be challenging as many tracks aren’t mapped and locals may be the only source of current road conditions. Carry significant water reserves — this is authentic sertão country where wells run dry and the nearest fuel may be 100+ kilometers away. The reward is experiencing Brazil’s authentic northeast interior culture and camping in landscapes where time moves at mule speed.
