Atacama Altiplano Mining Circuit

Extreme high-altitude mining circuit in Chile's Atacama

Extreme

This brutal high-altitude circuit connects abandoned copper workings above 4,000 meters in the Atacama, where rusted mining equipment sits frozen in time against backdrop of smoking volcanoes. The route links Mina Escondida’s perimeter roads with the ghost camps at Estación Chiu Chiu, crossing the Salar de Atacama’s eastern edge where flamingos feed in lithium-rich pools. You’ll navigate washboard tracks past sulfur deposits at Tatio Geysers and technical boulder fields near the abandoned Chuquicamata tailings.

Extreme difficulty due to altitude, exposure, and technical terrain requiring experienced high-altitude drivers with proper acclimatization. Modified 4WD with rock protection, extra fuel capacity, and emergency gear mandatory. Temperatures swing from -15°C nights to 25°C days, with sudden weather changes above 4,000 meters. No cell service, no water sources, no rescue infrastructure. Best attempted April-October with minimum 3-day supplies and satellite communication. Permits required for some mining concessions. This isn’t tourism—it’s expedition-level desert travel that rewards serious overlanders with some of the most alien landscapes on the planet.
