Serra da Mantiqueira Tea Estate Circuit
High-altitude fazenda circuit in Brazil's tea country
The dirt tracks through Serra da Mantiqueira climb past century-old coffee fazendas and into Brazil’s highest tea plantations, where morning fog rolls through eucalyptus groves at 1,800 meters. This circuit connects remote estate roads between Campos do Jordão and Pindamonhangaba, crossing half a dozen rocky creek beds where colonial-era stone bridges once stood. The route passes through Fazenda Santana’s abandoned tea processing facility and the still-operating coffee estates near Piquete.
Moderate difficulty with several technical creek crossings requiring good approach angles and rock sliders recommended. Stock 4WD handles most sections, but the climb to Pico do Itapeva demands low-range and proper tire pressure management. Dry season (May-September) offers best conditions, though mud can persist in shaded valleys. No permits required, but fazenda gates may be locked weekends. Dispersed camping possible near abandoned tea terraces, but bring all water and fuel from Campos do Jordão. You’ll earn spectacular views of the Paraíba Valley and some of the cleanest mountain air in southeastern Brazil.
