Salvation Mountain Folk Art Installation
Salvation Mountain is a massive folk art installation created by Leonard Knight over 28 years in the Sonoran Desert near Slab City, California. The colorful adobe and paint mountain stands three stories tall and 150 feet wide, covered in biblical verses, flowers, and the repeated message “God is Love.” Knight built the entire structure using adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of donated paint, creating caves, terraces, and walkways throughout.
Located just outside the off-grid community of Slab City, the site is accessible via a short dirt road from Highway 111. The installation is maintained by volunteers and visitors can explore freely. Best visited during cooler months as summer temperatures exceed 110°F with no shade. Bring water and sun protection.
